Ray Pérez was born in Anzoátegui state, Venezuela, and founded his first orchestra in 1965, called “Ray Pérez y su Charanga”. As he commented, he could not put “Los Dementes” in that opportunity because the director of the school where he studied told him that “musicians were not crazy.”
However, soon after he got his way and founded “Los Dementes”, a group with which he popularized songs considered immortal today such as Rómpelo, Oigan los cueros and Guajira Boogaloo, among others. Almost at the same time, Ray founded “Los Calvos”, with Negrito Calaven on vocals, and later “Los Kenyas”, with Calaven and Dimas Pedroza as vocalists. Calaven’s brother also participates as a singer with Ray Pérez, but in the Casabe orchestra, which was also made up of the excellent singers Octavio Palacios, artistically known as Nano Grand, and Guido Gómez, who also belonged to “Frank y su Tribu”.
