Description
The compilation edition of PP’S highlights a crucial moment in Venezuelan pop music history, celebrating the legacy of Pedro Pérez and his impact on the new wave scene. Named after the Pedro Pérez Show, PP’S brought a surge of musical energy that influenced bands like Sentimiento Muerto, La Seguridad Nacional, and Los Amigos Invisibles, all of whom helped refresh the Venezuelan musical landscape in line with the global trends of the 1980s.
Pedro Pérez, born in 1956, studied film in Montreal before transferring to the San Francisco Arts Institute due to the harsh Canadian climate. Immersed in San Francisco’s cultural scene, he formed the band New Robots and later PP’S, sharing the stage with punk icons like Dead Kennedys. Influences from Talking Heads, Devo, and reggae acts like Black Uhuru shaped his sound, blending diverse genres to create a vibrant musical identity.
PP’S released three albums in the 1980s: PP’S (1981), En el aire (1982), and Tercera Guerra Mundial (1984), all characterized by an infectious rhythm that made listeners want to dance. The band’s performances became iconic, and Pedro Pérez’s flamboyant style, like wearing golden spandex pants on Venezuelan TV, further solidified their place in popular culture. PP’S even opened for international acts like XTC in Caracas, adding to their legacy.
Despite facing a long hiatus and a period of censorship starting in 1986, Pérez revived PP’S with two more albums: La Iguana (2012) and En Vivo (2014). In 2023, the band gained new life with a fresh lineup, including Rachel “Noisemaker” García, Victor Hugo Mendoza, Chapis Lasca, and Claudio Leoni, preparing for upcoming performances and showcasing the enduring spirit of their music.
El Palmas Music’s exclusive compilation features select tracks from their original albums, reaffirming the label’s commitment to preserving Venezuelan cultural heritage. The music of PP’S, which transcends the new wave label by incorporating elements of progressive rock, space rock, and acid jazz, remains a testament to a diverse, genre-defying sound that continues to captivate audiences.
